Helpful Git Command Tips and Happy 10th Birthday Wishes

Happy 10th Birthday Git!

This year marks the 10th birthday of git,  the distributed version control system created by Linus Torvalds who's more famously known as the creator of the Linux kernel.  If you're a software developer, I hope you're at least familiar with source control systems because they make your professional life SO much easier (though I admit they can be a bit challenging to first get accustomed to...).

Even if you're day job isn't in the software development space, my guess is that if you're in IT in any capacity, you've probably interacted with Linux or other open source software systems, most of which use git (and / or github) to manage their source code repositories.

Below, I've included a few helpful tips and tricks I've discovered to make using git even more productive for your daily workflow, along with links to learn more about the history of git and an interview with Linus on his take on git after it's first 10 years...

So we all know it's not easy being  the "new kid."  When Sam and I moved back to Lafayette after spending almost 5 years in Austin, one of my concerns was getting back into the lIocal community while balancing school, an impending Marriage, and both of us taking on new jobs.

Whew, just thinking about those first few months makes me exhausted ;)

We were incredibly fortunate to discover the705 - Young Leaders for a Better Acadiana.  The mission of the705 "focuses on connecting, engaging and leading. Everything that we do as an organization must contain at least one of these components, and in fact, most events encompass all simultaneously."  As you might expect, they have LinkedIn and Facebook pages where you can learn more about them, their Board, and the membership.

It was truly refreshing to discover how welcoming the membership and Board were ...

Resumes & Job Searching

So after recently dealing with some unexpected medical events, I found my new position at ATG (ARTG) cut short. Although I was asked to re-apply for the position after completing my medical leave, I decided to update my resume and see what other opportunities might be available to me here in the Austin area.
You might think (as did I at first) that since I had been keeping my resume updated throughout my time at Dell (DELL), and that since Dell hired me with this resume, that this would be a relatively easy task. Was I mistaken! It appears that I had created a monstrosity of a resume that was unlikely to make it through the first wave of pruning by a busy HR hiring manager. You see, I had succumbed to what may be a rather common mistake among job-hunters - the dreaded over-written resume.

Through LinkedIn, I managed to connect with a resume and career consultant named Perry Newman from FirstImpressions who offered me a few bits of advice on how to improve my resume. Actually, he joked that what I had written might be classified as a CV, but was definitely not a resume :| Perry pointed me to a few posts he had written on his blog about writing a great resume, which I devoured along with as many other good tips I could find (links are at the bottom of this post).
